Known Limitations
Speakeasy is beta software. This page lists what does not exist yet or is not finished, so you can decide with accurate information.
Platforms
- No Mac desktop client yet. Windows and Linux (x64) are the supported desktop platforms today.
- No native iOS app yet.
- No native Android app yet.
- A web-based mobile client exists, but it is not equivalent to a native app: notification and background behavior depend on your mobile browser.
Accounts and authentication
- No social login yet. Accounts are email + password on the server you join. Two-factor authentication (TOTP authenticator apps + backup codes) is supported.
Installation trust
- Windows may show a SmartScreen warning because Speakeasy is new software without broad download reputation yet. See Why Windows may warn you for what the warning means and how to verify your download.
Security review status
- Speakeasy has not completed an independent security audit. The encryption design uses MLS (Messaging Layer Security) via an established Rust implementation, but the application as a whole has not been independently reviewed. Treat the current release as beta software. Details in the threat model.
Features not available yet
- No hosted Speakeasy servers. Self-hosting is the only option today; a hosted offering may come later.
- No public community discovery. You join servers by address/invite, not by browsing a directory.
- No bot or plugin ecosystem yet.
Hardware and environment caveats
- Some audio device, GPU, and screen-sharing combinations have not been broadly tested. If something misbehaves on your hardware, that is exactly the kind of report the beta needs — see contact.
- Self-hosting from home requires the ability to open/forward ports on your router. Setups behind CGNAT (some residential ISPs) need extra work.
The short version: Windows and Linux desktop, self-hosted servers, encrypted private conversations, voice rooms, and screen sharing work today. Mac, native mobile, social login, hosted servers, and an independent audit do not exist yet.
